Lens Replacement
LENS REPLACEMENT (TRIFOCAL, TRIFOCAL TORIK)
Every person has a natural lens inside the eye. This lens is transparent and elastic. When we look up close and into the distance, this lens changes its shape thanks to its elasticity and focusses on the distance seen. This allows us to see clearly both near and far.
With increasing age, the natural lens in our eyes initially loses its flexibility and can no longer change its shape and focus on near vision. With increasing age, it loses its transparency and cataracts develop.
As a rule, our own lenses, which lose their flexibility from the age of 40, are replaced by a new lens.
The deformed natural lens is replaced by an artificial lens, the Smart Lens. With this new lens, distance, intermediate and near vision can now be focussed so that clear vision is possible at any distance.
The Smart Lens (intraocular lens) ensures that cataracts do not progress any further.
Who is suitable for lens replacement?
Customers who are suitable for refractive lens exchange (RLE) usually have one or more of the following eye conditions:
Presbyopia
Myopia (short-sightedness)
Hyperopia (farsightedness)
Cataracts
Astigmatism
Dependence on glasses or contact lenses
How is lens replacement surgery performed?
Lens replacement is a quick surgical procedure that takes no longer than 20 minutes.
Before the procedure
Eye health must be examined
Your lens power and eye structure are measured to maximise visual clarity
During the procedure
Local anaesthetic eye drops are applied
A small incision is made in the cornea
The natural lens of the eye is removed
A customised artificial lens is implanted
The artificial lens is tailored to your exact size and prescription
Astigmatism can be corrected if a toric lens is selected
After the procedure
At the end of the treatment, an eye patch is placed on the treated eye.
This protects the eye and helps it adapt to the new lens.
A follow-up examination takes place the next day
The eye patch is usually worn for a few more days
Mild healing time lasts several days
